How to Find a Water Leak in Your Home

By Poinciana Plumbing Pros · Licensed Plumbers Serving Poinciana, FL

Water leaks are silent destroyers. A small leak behind a wall or under your slab can go unnoticed for months while causing mold growth, structural damage, and skyrocketing water bills. Here's how to detect a water leak in your Poinciana home — and what to do when you find one.

Step 1: Check Your Water Meter

The easiest way to confirm you have a leak is to check your water meter. Turn off all water in your home — faucets, appliances, irrigation — and note the meter reading. Wait 1–2 hours without using any water, then check the meter again. If the reading has changed, you have a leak somewhere in your system.

Step 2: Look for Visible Signs

Walk through your home and look for: wet spots or stains on walls, ceilings, or floors; bubbling or peeling paint; discoloration or warping of drywall; mold or mildew smell without visible mold; and water stains around the base of toilets, under sinks, or around appliances. These are all signs of a leak that needs attention.

Step 3: Check Your Toilets

Toilets are one of the most common sources of hidden water waste. To check for a toilet leak, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank (not the bowl). Wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, your flapper valve is leaking and needs to be replaced. A leaking toilet flapper can waste hundreds of gallons of water per day.

Step 4: Inspect Under Sinks and Around Appliances

Open the cabinet under every sink and look for moisture, water stains, or mold. Check the connections behind your washing machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator ice maker. These are common locations for slow leaks that go unnoticed for months.

Step 5: Look for Slab Leak Signs

Slab leaks — leaks in pipes running under your concrete foundation — are particularly common in older Poinciana homes. Signs include: warm spots on the floor (indicating a hot water slab leak), the sound of running water when everything is off, cracks in the foundation or flooring, and grass growing unusually fast in one area of the yard.

When to Call a Professional

If you've confirmed a leak but can't locate it, or if you suspect a slab leak, call a professional immediately. Hidden leaks require specialized equipment — electronic leak detectors, acoustic listening devices, and thermal imaging — to locate accurately. Attempting to open walls or floors without knowing exactly where the leak is can cause unnecessary damage and expense.
